Basil and Dracocephalum kotschyi alcoholic extracts affect BCL2 expression and HepG2 cell proliferation
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Liver cancer is the second outstanding reason for cancer-related death global and thus a main public health challenge. Plant-based drugs are regarded as promising therapies. Basil and Dracocephalum kotschyi extracts have shown therapeutic impacts on various cancers. Therefore, we assessed the effects of the extract of Basil and Dracocephalum kotschyi on cell proliferation and BCL2 expression in the HepG2 cell line. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, the HepG2 cell line was selected for treatment with the alcoholic extract of Basil and Dracocephalum kotschyi extracts. Cell proliferation was examined in the presence of various concentrations of the Basil and Dracocephalum kotschyi extracts by MTT-assay. Moreover, the effect of the alcoholic extract of Basil and Dracocephalum kotschyi on BCL2 expression was evaluated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Results: Cell proliferation studies represented anticancer characteristics of dose-dependent of the alcoholic extract of Basil and Dracocephalum kotschyi. Additionally, the extract of Basil and Dracocephalum kotschyi led to the decreased expression of BCL2 in HepG2 cell line. Conclusion: These findings propose Basil and Dracocephalum kotschyi as two promising candidates for future anticancer research. .

Dracocephalum kotschyi Boiss, a member of Labiatae family, is a native plant to Iran, which has been reported to have immunomodulatory, antihyperlipidemic and antispasmodic activities. The objective of this research was to study the antispasmodic and antidiarrhoeal activities of hydroalcoholic and hexane extracts of D. kotschyi in mice. Furthermore, the antidiarrhoeal and antispasmodic effect o...

From the whole plant of Dracocephalum kotschyi BOISS., two new monoterpene glycosides (9, 10), together with seven known terpenoids and a phytosterol (1-8), were isolated. Their structures were determined to be limonen-10-al (1), geranial (2), neral (3), beta-sitosterol (4), oleanolic acid (5), ursolic acid (6), p-mentha-8-en-1,2-diol (7), colosolic acid (8), limonen-10-ol 10-O-beta-D-glucopyra...

Trypanocidal activity was found in the volatile oil of dried Dracocephalum kotschyi. GC-MS analysis determined that the major constituents of the oil were geranial (35.8%), C10H14O (26.6%), limonene (15.8%) and 1,1-dimethoxy decane (14.5%). In order to isolate the unknown biologically active monoterpene, fractionation of the volatile oil was carried out by silica gel column chromatography. The ...

Dracocephalum kotschyi (Lamiaceae), as one of the remarkable aromatic plants, widely grows and also is cultivated in various temperate regions of Iran. There are diverse reports about the composition of the oil of this plant representing limonene derivatives as its major compounds. There is no report on cloning of monoor sesquiterpene synthases from this plant. In the present study, the aroma p...
